Feedback from Positioned Individuals – Counselling’s Class Problem and the Person-Centred Approach with Sarah Rossi & Katie Murray, 7th March 2026
This was PCT Scotland’s first workshop of our 2026 series, our third year of running the programme. Twenty-one of us gathered to spend some time listening to and discussing Sarah and Katie’s presentation and engaging in the creative exercises in the afternoon. They – and the participants! - raised a lot of questions and ideas in relation to class, counselling and power dynamics resulting in an excellent day with powerful, thought-provoking discussions and interactions.
If you are interested in joining us for any of the remaining workshops in our 2026 series please check out PCT Scotland’s website www.pctscotland.co.uk or contact Barbara Malinen on bookings@pctscotland.co.uk

I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday. It was hugely invigorating to be part of a discussion on power dynamic. It is a highly complex topic with many nuances and challenges on ethical frameworks.
It calls the helper to examine their own modalities and morality, and where that sits in the larger context of societal and cultural impact on mental health.
It was good fun for me, and it’s a little peek through the crack of the door in person-centred approach and hear the thoughts and opinions of people at various stages in their careers.

Thank you very much for this! I'm really glad that I was able to come along yesterday and found the workshop to be thought provoking and enjoyed hearing the different perspectives of the people there. The space felt welcoming and I am looking forward to coming back again for another workshop or encounter group.

Really good day, presenters had clearly put much into the presentation. Enjoyed as usual hearing the thoughts and ruminations of the participants. Lots to think about, lots to cover, could almost be a 2 day work shop. Enjoyed the Pantoun and zines (if that's how you spell it). Brought up a lot of feelings about injustice, prejudice, and how it is hard to fight back when you're marginalised and disempowered. Lots to think about after.
Would recommend this training to others.

I did have a good day! I've written a few words of feedback below. I'm quite happy for you to use it, with my first name attached - or anonymously if all the other contributions are anonymous.I got a lot out of this day on the under-acknowledged, under-discussed topic of social class in counselling. There was a good mixture of input and discussion, led by thoughtful and knowledgeable facilitators. Fittingly, the issue was covered from several different angles: personal, professional and political. The more creative sessions in the afternoon were more useful and fun than I anticipated. I'm always a bit nervous when called on to be creative in such settings, but the tasks were well defined and set up, and there was no pressure to share. The zine activity prompted me to reflect on what I wanted to take away from the workshop, and enabled me to produce something far more useful and memorable than a few scribbled notes.
The overall mood was friendly, and I got a lot out of the chats I had with other participants throughout the day.

I very much enjoyed the event. I would have liked this to be over at least 2 days, as such a wide topic. As we all said, would love more of this on training courses moving forward as seems such a miss. I always enjoy discussion with peers the most at events, so would have preferred this rather than the creative section (this is not my forte or favourite
Thanks for all of the info and the work that PCT does, great bunch of people.

The training was very useful to highlight the links between British society and how the population is stratified and how the societal structure relates to counselling and how a subject like class could possibly be brought into the counselling room. Well thought out and well-presented

Thanks for a thought provoking day. I particularly appreciated the creative exercises which helped to connect me at a deeper, emotional level to my experiences around class and how it shows up in the counselling room.

I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop on Class and Counselling last weekend. I learnt a lot, and found great value in exploring this hugely important topic. The creative elements and added resources were extremely helpful, and I’m inspired to bring a class-aware perspective to my training and eventually, into my practice.
