Feedback from the Person Centred Counselling in Action Workshop with Terry Daly 8th March 2025
This was a second opportunity for people to experience this workshop. It was – again - a moving experience to watch the video of Dave Mearns working with Terry Daly over 30 years ago. The following discussion with Terry was rich, exciting and thoughtful – and completely different from the discussion following the first showing of the video.

"For those of us who can claim to be “end-of-the-last-century-Jordanhill-diploma-graduates” this workshop promised a dose of healthy nostalgia and a dollop of happy reunions. And, for this delegate at least, it more than delivered on that expectation. The screening of a 33-year old, blurry video whose protagonists were unlined and fresh-faced might have felt backward-looking to some. But this was far from the case and it was heartening and reassuring to appreciate the relevance and importance of the “quality of presence” three decades down the line. This was attributable partly because the workshop attracted a broad mix of delegates who were fully engaged in the course and whose experience was as varied and interesting as the discussions which followed the screening. It was also attributable to the sensitively and creatively curated facilitation by the workshop leaders, Barbara and Terry, whose input generated layers of discussion. Thank you to them. And to my fellow participants.”

"Given the current 21st Century demands on Counsellors to offer tools and deliver results in short term work, it was heartening to see how powerful just being alongside a client can be. There was a useful discussion around the use of silence and it felt a compassionate and well held group. There is a timeless eloquence to the Person Centred approach which I believe was witnessed in this demonstration and it was interesting to see the theory come alive and to hear both men’s unique perspectives."

"It was one of the best Person Centred workshop I have attended. It was a pleasure to watch Dave offering his presence in the session, and also hearing him reflecting on the experience a year later. It was also great to hear Terry's experience of being the client, what came up for him then and how he sees it now. As always I loved being part of the encounter group and sharing personal experiences and the impact the workshop had on everyone. I would highly recommend taking part if another opportunity comes up."

“This was my first experience of attending a PCT Scotland workshop and I felt very welcome and engaged throughout. It was great to meet and connect with other practitioners. The discussion prompted much reflection on my part of my person-centred practice and I felt there was much to learn from the video demo, and in particular, to hear from Terry about his experience as client. I loved that he responded to our curiosity and wondering with such warmth and clarity. I've been glad to have my own supervision a few days later where I've been able to reflect on my own experience and learning further.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the day. The video recording of the session between Dave Mearns and Terry was a great starting point. It was an opportunity to be within a person centred group (after a gap of many years!) and experience a series of thoughtfully facilitated discussions. The atmosphere was one of sensitivity and acceptance yet challenged my thinking on several occasions.
Thank you to everyone who was there.”

“Thanks so much for the brilliant workshop, Barbara, Terry and PCTS. It was a true touchstone for me in my practice to be with person-centred practitioners to consider and reflect all that we did together last Saturday. The discussion felt truly held within a facilitative attitude. This was deeply heartening in amongst the challenge of the work we do, individually and collectively. Touching in with the way silence is used to create space for psychological contact by seeing a practice in action, and considering the ramifications of this profound half-hour of therapeutic work felt deeply clarifying. The warmth of the PCTS community is profound for all of us fortunate enough to be involved. Thank you.”
