This workshop will be an opportunity to discuss the nature of presence and how it relates to power. The topic of presence is a familiar theme for person-centred therapists although there is no single, universal definition of the word. Attunement, relational depth, spiritual connection, healing, transcendence and energy are just some examples of language used in the conversation around what it means to be present. Rogers shifted from a secular stance to describe presence from a spiritual and mystical perspective towards the end of his life. For some therapists, presence is no more than the six conditions in action while for others there is a qualitative difference. It has been described by some scholars as a fourth therapist condition. Whatever the position taken by each individual, presence is a subjective and potentially visceral experience between therapist and client. Such a potent way of being has implications for power dynamics which are always at play in the therapeutic relationship. In this workshop we will come together and share our own understanding and experiences of presence and explore how it can relate to power in the therapy room.

Louise Wilson is a person-centred counsellor and supervisor working in Edinburgh. She is a member of the Persona Training and Development staff team and a trustee for the Person-Centred Association.

This workshop is the second of PCT Scotland’s 2025 workshops. Each of these will be a stand alone event but the series as a whole is designed to develop, enhance and promote understanding of the Approach. Each of the presenters will be attending the workshops as facilitators of the group process. It is possible to attend any or all of the workshops.

The cost of each workshop is:

PCT Scotland Members: £50.00 per workshop
Non-members: £70.00 per workshop
