I believe in the client's capacity for self-determination. The client is the best person to make decisions for him/herself. I see my role as twofold: as providing a safe place for the client to explore their thoughts and feelings, to find out who they are and how they may want to be in their lives; and as an active participant in this process.
I come from a background in education and drama.
Over the last twenty years, my work as a counsellor has involved me in a variety of settings: in the voluntary sector, with Careers Scotland, in University Counselling Services (both at Aberdeen and RGU), as a school counsellor, tutoring counselling skills at Aberdeen University, taking EAP referrals and working with social workers and training volunteer counsellors.
After over 10 years working part time at the Aberdeen University Counselling Service where I saw staff and students and in Private Practice with adults and young people, I retired from the University Service two years ago. My Private Practice is now mainly focused on supervising both experienced practitioners and students near the end of their training.
