Hello ,I believe that I am a warm and caring person and I enjoy working with people very much. I am wondering if there is any way in which I can help you with the problems that you are currently experiencing in your life. We all have problems and we all need support. Are you supportive to your self or do you think you just " need to pull yourself together and get on with it"?

I have worked with people with depression, anxiety, stress, low self esteem, self loathing etc and I am also particularly interested in people presenting with relational and connection difficulties. People who do not feel welcome in this world and who feel alienated and isolated.

I have worked in the NHS for many years as a Nurse Practitioner and have a good understanding of the impact that health issues have on each persons quality of life. I have also worked in the clinical area with people who had cancer and I currently volunteer with Cancer support Scotland. I have also had the privilege to work with people who had problems with their heart and lungs and who faced major surgery as a consequence of this. I know the impact this can have on the person and also the members of the family (carers). So many difficult situations for the people involved.

If you feel you would like to have a chat please feel free to get in touch.

I have availability in a confidential space in my home. It is completely secluded and looks out on to the back garden. Parking is readily available. I also have access to a lovely room in Paisley town centre if preferred and there is some free parking here. There is also wheelchair access at this site only. I also have access to another room in the West end of Glasgow near Charing cross and just off woodlands road.

I have a background in education and management. My counselling experience covers work with individuals in a variety of settings within the Voluntary Sector, NHS, Further Education, Prison Service and Homeless Sector. I mainly work in my own private practice and do both counselling and supervision. I have an interest in the use of creative materials and open to this exploration as a means of processing.

“When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.” (Rogers, C.R., p.160, A Way of Being).

Experience: I have over twenty years experience, initially as a youth counsellor and then with Aberdeen Counselling and Information Service (ACIS) working with the general public. Latterly, I was employed for fifteen years counselling students and staff of Aberdeen University before my early retirement this year.

A little about my work background:

As a child care officer working with young people in residential care, I was introduced to the work of Carl Rogers, an American psychologist, and was immediately drawn to what was a deeply respectful way of working with individuals. This started me on a journey to learn more and, despite having little success at school, I was able to gain a degree in Psychology with the Open University. I then studied person-centred counselling at Strathclyde University, one of the first institutions to bring Rogers's Client-centered Therapy to Britain. Since then, I have continued to work (and learn) with individuals in this way.

My approach to therapy is consistent with my own personal understanding of how people grow and develop. I trust, accept and respect an individual’s feelings, beliefs, culture and ways of being. I believe each individual is the expert on themselves, knows what their needs are and can be trusted to find their own way forward.

I aim to offer a safe, therapeutic environment, a genuine relationship an individual may use for their own personal growth. The initial quote above from the work of Rogers exemplifies for me how therapy can be of value.

Exploratory Session: I offer this initial session to explore with you what brings you into counselling and your expectations of this relationship. If you would like to continue working with me, ongoing sessions are usually for one hour, a single session or more, weekly or less frequently to suit your situation or preference.

I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Code of Ethics: BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice (http://www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework).
Complaints Procedure: BACP Professional Conduct Procedure (http://www.bacp.co.uk/prof_conduct/).

Insurance: Professional Liability insurance.

Supervision: I receive regular, monthly, supervision. Client names are not used.

Confidentiality: This will be explained in the exploratory session, however, all information is securely filed.

Contact: I use a private mobile number for clients to contact me and/or leave messages re appointments or cancellations. If I need to contact you, I will leave only my first name and contact number.

How to Find Me: AB16 7AR. A No. 59 or 13 bus will take you to Northfield, which is north of Aberdeen City centre.

I'm a very experienced counsellor and my approach can help with a range of issues. You maybe experiencing depression or anxiety, struggling to deal with a bereavement or loss, having relationship/marriage difficulties, work/ career issues , loss of confidence or low self esteem, or you may be dealing with abuse ,or work related stress.

I work from the Southside Centre on Causewayside in a bright, private room , with metered parking and bus stops nearby.

I understand that choosing a counsellor can be a difficult thing to do , so I offer an informal 30 minute consultation for us to discuss your expectations of counselling and for you to find out more about my approach . The fee is £15. Please give me a call on 07740678218 or send me an email to find out more.

I work with individuals and couples and my approach centres on creating a caring relationship based on trust, understanding and acceptance through which you can explore your issues or problems and find effective ways to deal with them, and make positive changes to how you manage your life.

I addition to working face to face I also offer counselling and supervision via Skype . Please contact me for more information.
